Introducing the Awesomemobile
Wednesday, March 21, 2007
Man, I've been waiting to tell you guys about this for a long time, and now that the moment is finally here, it's strangely bittersweet. Ha! No it's not! It's totally awesome!

So, a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, I designed a t-shirt. It was right on the heels of some failed submissions over at Threadless, and one criticism I had received was that I made too many pop culture references in my designs. Never one to take criticism seriously, I figured I would try to cram as many pop culture references as humanly possible onto one shirt. You know, just to cheese that person off. Thus, the Awesomemobile was born; a Frankenstein's monster of 6 different vehicles from movies and TV shows we all know and quote from. Can you find them all? Long story short, I showed it to Scott and he offered to to put it in his ThinkGeek store... and that's just what he did. Head on over to ThinkGeek and you can buy this shirt right now, along with a new shirt by Kris Straub and tons of other quality PvP merch. I'm really proud of this design, and I'm glad I can finally talk about it!

In other news, the auction is over! Congratulations to the winner, and for the rest of you, be on the lookout for another Ugly Hill original art auction this coming Monday!

I am so glad to hear that you designed this t-shirt. It looks way cooler than the shit Kurtz comes up with. That dude draws a decent comic for a complete tool.

congrats on the awesome awesomemobile, I'm glad it didn't get swallowed up by the yawning vortex of creative frustration at threadless.

I can only spot 5! Which one am I missing?! My geek cred is ruined now! *sob*

I can only spot 5, too. I hope that isn't supposed to be a homage to KITT on the front, because everything else is really well done.

Yes, Ron, that is KITT on the front. It doesn't read terribly well in simple lineart, but I figured that was part of the fun; searching over the details and having the different pieces pop out at you if you look hard enough.

I'm sorry to have disappointed you. You know how important your opinion is to me!

KITT is an obscure part of the drawing, but it gives us reason to stare after we get the first 5, and will allow the user to point it out to someone else viewing it. You've bade it interactive and a conversation starter. Plus it just looks kickass.

Bug eye peter, totally agree with toolbox.

He's not bug-eyed, he's Google-eyed.

It's not that it's obscure (yes, I agree, it's fun to hunt); it's that the mimicry isn't nearly done as well as the other five. Paul definitely has the skills to pull it off, if the other 5 are any indication.

But yes, I'll try to fawn a little more next time.

Aww, no fawning necessary, Ron!

But in the future, I might advise you to follow rule #1 in my patented 550 Rules of Internet Etiquetteâ„¢: "Always ensure that the content and tone of your comment would be just as appropriate in real life as they are behind the protective anonymous barrier of the Internet".

"I hope that isn't supposed to be a homage to KITT on the front..." is a little snarky, and presented in a tone I doubt you would be using were we speaking face-to-face!

Just another tip from your friendly neighborhood politeness nazi.

So, I found five but one was Kitt. What's the obvious one I'm missing? (got X-wing, Lee, Enterprise, DeLorean, and Kitt.)

Herbie the Love Bug! Number 53, baby!

KITT occurred to me, but I dismissed the possibility because the little boxes along the front (which are presumably KITT's "cylon eye") are discreet and separated, not a single bar with square divisions.

Ron's right, every other bit of it was fairly clear--I instantly recognized the Enterprise warp nacelles, the turned tires and Mr. Fusion of the DeLorean, the aelerons of the X-Wing, and the Confederate flag of the General Lee. The 53 for Herby took a moment longer, and I was momentarily unsure whether that was referring to Herby or Speed Racer (I couldn't remember if Speed had a number or not), but that uncertainty was only temporary. 5 of 6 stars, if I were rating the parody, and all it'd take for a 6th would be little lines joining those boxes on the front grill.

I used a photo reference! They look like individual lights to me...

Both the headlights, and the eye lights are spot one. The only thing that would help it come off as kitt would be if the grill and hood came to a bit of a point in the middle, instead of being flat fronted. Easy to change?

Oh I guess it also depends on what season you're talking about. But they all do have that pointy nose.

I like how the base of the x-wings look like old-timey swamp cooler car a/c's. :)

I only got five too, but the 53 was my missing link... I think the kitt thing was a tricky choice since a shirt can't *talk* or nuthin.

Loved the Mike & the Mechanics quote in the latest strip -- something teens now wouldn't possibly (?) get... MY thoughts: "Aaaaah, he made it for me *blushes*" Ta mate!
